What a year it was for amateur golf in 2023.
The best female amateur of all-time, Rose Zhang, capped her career in as strong of fashion as possible, winning the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and her second straight NCAA Championship. Nick Dunlap won the U.S. Amateur and in the process accomplished something only Tiger Woods had ever done before him: win a U.S. Amateur and a U.S. Junior.
Then there were the American men, which included Dunlap, winning a Walker Cup at St. Andrews and the World Amateur Team Championship in Abu Dhabi.
Amateur golf has never been stronger, and the schedule is looking great for another spectacular year in 2024.
Here are the key events on the amateur schedule in 2024.
When: April 3-6
Where: Champions Retreat Golf Club; Evans, Georgia; and Augusta National Golf Club; Augusta, Georgia
What to know: If this year’s event was any indication, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur is only getting better. Rose Zhang’s thrilling playoff victory over Jenny Bae was the best version of ANWA yet. Here’s to hoping the 2024 rendition continues to grow.
When: May 17-29
Where: Omni La Costa Resort & Spa; Carlsbad, California
What to know: New year, new venue for the NCAA Championships, which head to Southern California and Omni La Costa for the first of a three-year deal to have the championships in Carlsbad. The course is finishing a significant renovation and should provide a strong test for both men’s and women’s play.
When: Aug. 5-11
Where: Southern Hills Country Club; Tulsa, Oklahoma
What to know: The longest and most storied women’s amateur championship heads to Tulsa, where in 2022 a playoff was needed to decide the PGA Championship at the same course. With plenty of history at Southern Hills, the U.S. Women’s Amateur will add another chapter come August.
When: Aug. 12-18
Where: Hazeltine National Golf Club; Chaska, Minnesota
What to know: Hazeltine has hosted some of the biggest events in the golf world, most recently the 2016 Ryder Cup. Now, the best amateurs in the world will head to Minnesota to try to capture the Havemeyer Trophy.
When: Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
Where: Sunningdale Golf Club; England
What to know: It’s time again for the biennial competition between the best female amateurs from the United States and Great Britain & Ireland. The Americans have dominated the competition, leading the overall series, 31-8-3, but the competition has never been tougher.
