Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are set to take on Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in a made-for-TV 18-hole shootout in Las Vegas later this year that is being promoted as a PGA Tour versus LIV Golf League match-up.
The fourball, two-team match will be broadcast on TNT, which has aired the previous nine editions of ‘The Match’, an exhibition series that began in 2018 with a match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, and most recently featured McIlroy facing off against Max Homa, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson in February.
“I’m excited to team up with Scottie for what promises to be an exciting showdown against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December,” said McIlroy. “This is more than just a competition between some of golf’s major champions; it’s a event that aims to excite the fans. We are all here to deliver a great spectacle and participate in a charitable event that brings the best together once again.”
McIlroy has participated in two editions of The Match and several other made-for-TV exhibitions. Scheffler will be making his exhibition golf debut after a successful season where he claimed the Olympic gold medal and won seven PGA Tour events, including the Masters and the Tour Championship, where he earned a $25 million first-place bonus for winning the FedEx Cup.
The match comes at a time when the PGA Tour is under mounting pressure to finalize a framework agreement for a merger with LIV Golf’s financial backers, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. The agreement was initially reached in June last year, but so far there have been no indications of a successful union between the two entities.
