The draw for the 2024 Croatia Open in Umag has been released, as the players gear up for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The ATP 250 tournament in Umag, running from July 21st to 27th, is the last event before players head to Paris for the Olympic Games, and with the Olympics starting on July 27th, should some make it deep, they may withdraw from the tournament.
Starting off, one of the adepts to withdraw from the tournament even before it starts is the third-seeded Holger Rune. The Danish player competed at the 2024 Hamburg Open, where he was down 4-6, 1-4 to Arthur Fils, before he retired due to a knee issue.
However, should he compete in Umag, the 21-year-old would have a first-round BYE, which could provide him enough time to recover for a second-round match against either Fabio Fognini or Luca Van Assche.
Alexei Popyrin will also compete in Croatia, and he is actually the defending champion, having won the title last year after beating Stan Wawrinka in the final. Yet, this year’s draw was brutal to him, giving him Jakub Mensik in the first round, and the winner of the match between the fifth-seeded Luciano Darderi and Duje Ajdukovic in the second round.
The top seed in Umag is Andrey Rublev, who won’t compete at the Olympic Games. The Russian is coming to the Croatian city after a heart-breaking loss that he suffered in Bastad, and as a top seed, he may recover really well from that loss in Umag.
With a first-round BYE, Rublev will start in round two, taking on either home wild card Luka Mikrut or Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina. On the opposite side of the draw is recent Wimbledon semi-finalist, Lorenzo Musetti, who is seeded second.
The young Italian has no clue who his first opponent may be, as he starts with a first-round BYE, and in the second round of the tournament, he will take on the winner of the match between two qualifiers.
Should he make it to the quarter-finals, Musetti could face yet another qualifier, or the sixth-seeded Mariano Navone, who lost a four-hour match with Rafael Nadal, Flavio Cobolli, or possibly Dusan Lajovic. The full draw for the 2024 Croatia Open in Umag can be seen below.
