2024 Guadalajara Open WTA Draw With Collins, Stephens, Ostapenko

The draw for the 2024 Guadalajara Open has been revealed and the WTA 500 tournament promises a lot of exciting action.

The WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, doesn’t have the best spot in the calendar. Running from September 9th to 15th, the tournament starts one day after the conclusion of the 2024 US Open, the last major of the season.

That might make it difficult for many players to make their way to Guadalajara, but on the other hand, those that lost early at Flushing Meadows might find great interest in playing at the event to make up for the lost time, points, and prize money.

Last year, the Guadalajara Open was classified as a WTA 1000 tournament, and Maria Sakkari proved to be the best, winning the title. This year, however, she won’t defend her title.

Sakkari was forced to withdraw from the Guadalajara Open, meaning that in the third edition of the tournament, there will be a new champion crowned, as the 2022 winner, Jessica Pegula, who didn’t even sign up for the event, also won’t play at the tournament, having competed in the US Open final only a few hours prior to the tournament start.

In their absence, the highest-ranked player in the draw is Jelena Ostapenko, who, like all top four seeds, will have a first-round BYE, starting in the second round of the tournament.

The Latvian will face a tricky second-round matchup, having to take on the winner of the match between Marina Stakusic and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who played in a bronze medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

On the opposite side of the draw is the second-seeded Danielle Collins. The American will retire from professional tennis after the 2024 season, and she lost early at the US Open.

She didn’t want to have a ceremony after her loss in New York, showing how focused she still is on her tennis career. But despite starting in the second round in Guadalajara, the draw was brutal to her.

Already in the second round of the tournament, fans in Mexico might see an all-American matchup between Collins and former US Open winner, Sloane Stephens, who will start against one of the qualifiers in the first round.

Victoria Azarenka struggled physically at the US Open, but she should be healthy entering the 2024 Guadalajara Open, and as the third seed, she will want to prove her qualities. She will start in the second round against the winner of a match between a qualifier and Kamilla Rakhimova.

Caroline Garcia has been having a season that is far from her expectations, and she recently parted ways with her coach. In Guadalajara, she will want to regain her form, starting against one of the qualifiers in the second round.

The full draw for the 2024 Guadalajara Open with all first-round matchups can be seen in the table below.
