Top Players Shelton, Tiafoe, and Shapovalov Set to Compete in the 2024 Atlanta Open ATP Draw

2024 Atlanta Open ATP Draw With Shelton, Tiafoe, Shapovalov

The 2024 Atlanta Open is the first hard-court tournament after the clay and grass seasons, and the draw for the event has been revealed.

Running from July 22nd to 28th, the ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta has a really tricky spot in the calendar this year. It’s held almost immediately after the Wimbledon Championships, played on grass, and one week prior to the Paris Olympics, played on clay.

Since the tournament is played on hard, it relied only on the players who chose not to compete at the Olympic Games, or alternatively, those that didn’t qualify for various reasons. Even despite these challenges, the tournament organizers actually managed to attract a really strong field.

Apart from the years when the Olympic Games are part of the calendar, the Atlanata Open usually offers a great transition to the hard courts for players ahead of the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open, which are North American ATP 1000 tournaments.

One of the players who won’t compete at the Paris Olympics is the top seed in Atlanta, Ben Shelton. Like all top four seeded players, he has a first-round BYE, and in the second round, he will play either against home wild card Andres Martin or one of the qualifiers.

However, his possible quarter-final match could get really interesting. In the second half of his quarter, another wild card, Denis Shapovalov will take on David Goffin, and the winner of this match will play against the winner of the match between Christopher O’Connell and Max Purcell.

Starting another quarter of the draw is the fourth-seeded Jordan Thompson, who despite having a first-round BYE, received a brutal draw, having to play against either Thanasi Kokkinakis or Borna Coric, who is a former Cincinnati Open champion, in the second round of the tournament.

As if it wasn’t enough, former World No. 17, Reilly Opelka, who made his comeback at the Newport Open, is in the second part of his quarter, taking on Aleksandar Kovacevic, with the winner playing against either Arthur Cazaux or the fifth-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The third-seeded Frances Tiafoe will start against either a qualifier or Aslan Karatsev in the second round of the competition, with his possible quarter-final opponent being the winner of the match between the seventh-seeded Brandon Nakashima and Mackenzie McDonald.

Adrian Mannarino is the second seed in Atlanta. The Frenchman will take on the better of one of the qualifiers or Aleksandar Vukic in the second round, possibly taking on the winner of the match between the sixth-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic and Lloyd Harris in the quarter-finals.
