Jannik Sinner will not be playing at the 2024 Bastad Open next week, announcing his withdrawal shortly after his 2024 Wimbledon Championships loss.
Sinner was playing excellent tennis leading up to his match with Daniil Medvedev at SW19, but things went badly in that match. He took the opening set in a close tie-break, but he started to experience some physical issues, which even saw him step off the court for a while during a medical time out.
While he continued the match, after the match, Sinner admitted that he wasn’t feeling very well but tried to fight through it. It was a valiant effort, but it took a lot out of him, and it’s one of the reasons why fans won’t see him at the Bastad Open.
The Italian was planning to play at the event to get some competitive matches on clay ahead of the Olympic Games, which will also be played on clay. He’s not the only one thinking that way, as Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud are some of the names who will also play at the event.
However, due to everything that has happened in recent days, Sinner opted to withdraw from the ATP 250 event and release a statement on the matter. It wasn’t something he planned or wished for, but ultimately, after consulting his team and doctors, the Italian withdrew from the event.
“I’m sad to have to withdraw from Bastad next week due to fatigue. Never an easy decision as I would love to play, but following the advice from my team and doctors they have advised it’s best to take some time to rest and recover. I hope to play Bastad in the future, I’ve heard it’s a great tournament.”
In the grand scheme of things, this is likely a very good decision, because it was clear in his match against Medvedev that his tank was empty.
