Coco Gauff‘s and Jessica Pegula‘s journey at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships is over, as they ran into the top seeds Elise Mertens and Su-Wei Hsieh in the quarter-finals.
After not playing together for a while, the American duo teamed up at Wimbledon ahead of the Olympic Games. They haven’t been able to play much doubles together lately because Pegula was out with an injury.
In the meantime, Gauff played doubles and won Roland Garros with Katerina Siniakova. Despite some solid showings earlier at Wimbledon, they won’t play in the final at SW19 because they were outplayed in the quarter-finals.
Top-seeded Mertens and Hsieh are some of the best doubles players on the WTA Tour, and they proved it in this match. The Taiwanese player is especially among the best, always finding a way to win, regardless of her partner and age.
In this quarter-final, they delivered yet another doubles masterclass, as the win came fairly easily for the duo. The opening set lasted only 37 minutes and saw the top seeds break the Americans twice en route to a 6-2 win.
As often times before, the serve proved a huge issue for Gauff and Pegula. When they hit their first serve, they dominated, but on the second, they barely won any points. A 46% first-serve percentage certainly wasn’t good enough, especially after they won only 14% of rallies after their second serve.
The second set opened with an early break for the Taiwanese-Belgian team, who were simply outplaying their opponents regularly. Even with a slightly improved serve, Gauff and Pegula couldn’t challenge their opponents.
They managed to break their opponents once in the second set, but that didn’t matter, as they were broken four times. It was a 2-6, 1-6 loss for the Americans, who will be hoping to find some form at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be their next tournament together.
