The 2024 United Cup is inching closer, but not all top players will take part in the event as quite a few of them will miss it.
The United Cup is a team competition where multiple nations will fight it out for the trophy. The ties between nations generally consist of one ATP singles match, one WTA singles match, and then one mixed doubles match.
It’s proved to be an interesting event, with several big players taking part since its inception. This will year will see some of them such as Alexander Zverev, return, as he’ll join Angelique Kerber, who is making a comeback from maternity leave at the competition.
Despite multiple stars taking part, such as Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic, quite a few of them have opted to skip the competition either in favor of another event or simply won’t play that week.
Coco Gauff
First among them is Coco Gauff, who has never played at the competition. Her doubles partner Jessica Pegula played last year and actually won the competition for the United States alongside Frances Tiafoe and other players.
Even so, Gauff opted against playing in the competition in favor of the ASB Classic in Auckland, where she won the trophy last year.
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz is the second player who won’t play at the event as the Spaniard has yet to make a debut at the competition. The Spaniard is rumoured to skip all events leading up to the Australian Open, which would be an interesting approach, but he’s booked several exhibitions.
One of them is against Novak Djokovic in Saudi Arabia in December.
Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal is indeed coming back to tennis in January, but he won’t do it at the United Cup. The Spaniard revealed his comeback plan in a social media announcement committing to play in Brisbane ahead of the Australian Open.
