The 2024 Berlin Open is one of three WTA 500 grass-court tournaments, and the draw was released for the event running from June 17th to 23rd.
As a rare WTA 500 tournament on the green surface, it’s not a surprise that the Berlin Open, renamed to ecotrans Ladies Open for sponsorship reasons in 2024, attracts some of the best players in the world.
Iga Swiatek was supposed to headline the field this year, but she withdrew from the tournament due to physical and mental fatigue. Also, last year’s champion, Petra Kvitova won’t compete at the tournament as she’s pregnant with her first child.
In the absence of the Polish world no. 1, Coco Gauff, who rose to her new career-high second place after the Roland Garros, will be the top seed at the 2024 Berlin Open.
Like all top four seeds, the American has a first-round bye at the tournament, starting in the second round against the winner of the match between Beatriz Haddad Maia and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The Berlin Open draw is really star-studded, so it’s not a surprise that there are many great first-round matches, such as the one between the sixth-seeded Qinwen Zheng and four-time major winner Naomi Osaka.
Jessica Pegula, who is one of the very few players who already played on grass this year, will want to forget her Den Bosch disappointment, and as the fourth seed, she will get a chance to do that in the second round of the tournament, starting against either Donna Vekic or home player Jule Niemeier.
Elena Rybakina is the third seed in the German capital, and the former Wimbledon champion will begin her campaign against a qualifier or Liudmila Samsonova. The full draw for the 2024 Berlin Open can be accessed below.
