Tottenham Leading the Race for Andy Robertson
Tottenham Hotspur appears to be the top candidate to acquire Liverpool defender Andy Robertson this summer, following the confirmation that he will leave Anfield at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.
According to David Ornstein from The Athletic, Spurs are well-positioned to sign the 32-year-old on a free transfer, but this is dependent on the club maintaining their Premier League status.
Robertson has made the decision not to renew his contract, signaling an emotional end to his nine-year association with Liverpool, where he played a crucial role in the team’s success.
Challenges Ahead for Spurs
While Tottenham is currently in the lead, they face a serious challenge. The team is presently ranked 17th in the Premier League, just one point clear of relegation, meaning they must avoid demotion to finalize the deal.
Ornstein noted that talks for this transfer began back in January when Spurs attempted, unsuccessfully, to bring the Scottish international to North London.
Although Robertson opted to complete the season with Liverpool, the allure of a new challenge in London has kept Tottenham ahead of other interested clubs.
However, they are not the only ones interested; major European teams such as Atletico Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus are also keeping tabs on the situation.
There have also been rumors of a possible return to Scotland with his childhood club Celtic, but reports suggest Robertson is inclined to stay in a top-tier European league.
A Legendary Chapter Closes
Robertson’s exit signifies the end of a remarkable era at Liverpool. Since joining from Hull City for £8 million in 2017, the Scotland captain has earned every major trophy, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
With 373 appearances, along with 13 goals and 69 assists, he leaves the club as a true legend.
The announcement comes during a challenging season for Liverpool, who have suffered 15 defeats across all competitions.
With Mohamed Salah also confirmed to depart and Milos Kerkez gaining favor under Arne Slot, Robertson expressed that the time is right to move on. “I’ve put my heart and soul into this club for nine years,” he stated in his farewell message. “I understand that football moves on, and I believe now is the time for my next journey.”
