While acknowledging the pressing need for a manager to guide Spurs away from potential relegation, the Trust revealed they had raised concerns with the club’s board prior to the announcement, but their voices were disregarded.
De Zerbi’s Past Comments Cause Outrage
The primary source of the dissent relates to comments De Zerbi made during his time at Marseille regarding Mason Greenwood. These statements were described by the Trust as “unnecessary, ill-considered, and deeply offensive,” leading to alarm among victims of male violence.
The statement from the Trust emphasized, “The Club has made prior commitments to confront instances of violence against women and girls. Any semblance of support for those accused of such acts fundamentally erodes trust in the stewardship of this Club.”
They further argued that De Zerbi’s appointment casts a “troubling shadow” over the club’s integrity at a time when unity is critical.
Women of the Lane Express Firm Disapproval
The objections extend beyond the THST. The co-founder of Women of the Lane, a vital group championing female Spurs fans, expressed strong disapproval of De Zerbi’s hiring.
