Stefanos Tsitsipas has many goals for this season, and he shared some of them in a recent interview in his native Greece.
Tsitsipas has been among the top players for a few years now, but outside a few big wins and a few deep runs at the Grand Slam level, he hasn’t quite lived up to the hype he had a few years ago.
This teenager was beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, looking destined for greatness but it’s yet to come. Somewhere along the journey, things got complicated, and more recently, he was overtaken by even younger players like Jannik Sinner and Calrlos Alcaraz.
His 2024 campaign started with some injury woes that he overcame at the Australian Open, but it didn’t quite work out in the best possible way. He was beaten by Taylor Fritz quite early, failing to match his final run from the previous year.
This raises the same question again: Can he actually go all the way? The Greek would tell you that he can, but nothing he has shown on the courts in recent months backs that up.
He still seems to be trending downward, which is quite scary for such a talented player, who may soon exit the Top 10 for the first time in years. Injuries are starting to pile up as well, and it’s not looking that well.
He spoke to ERT News recently, admitting that his goals are still the same. He firmly believes in Grand Slam success in 2024 but also wants Olympic success, with Roland Garros as the hosting site.
“My goal for 2024 is definitely a Grand Slam and an Olympic medal. It means a lot to me. It’s a lifelong dream to compete with Petros at the Olympic Games in Paris.”
He’s clearly got the ambition. We can debate forever whether it’s realistic or not, but having self-belief is essential. If you don’t believe, you certainly won’t do it.
