Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has been named the Most Improved Player of the Year for the current season. Maxey emerged as the team’s second star alongside Joel Embiid, making his first All-Star appearance and taking on a leadership role when Embiid was sidelined with a knee injury in January.

“It feels great,” Maxey said during the TNT broadcast announcing the award. “Somebody like myself, who prides myself on putting in a lot of work and outworking people, it feels good for that to come to light, honestly.”

The Philadelphia 76ers are currently in a playoff series against the New York Knicks.

His Competition for the Award

Coby White of the Chicago Bulls was considered a strong contender for the Most Improved Player of the Year award, finishing in second place. In third place was Alperen Sengun of the Houston Rockets. Other notable players receiving votes included Jalen Williams, Jalen Brunson, Deni Avdija, Cam Thomas, Jalen Suggs, Tyrese Haliburton, Grayson Allen, Duncan Robinson, Devin Vassell, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Aaron Nesmith.

Maxey faced tough competition for the award, especially from three other All-Stars who also received votes. Nevertheless, Maxey’s improvement in numbers from last season and his emergence as a leader for the 76ers make him a deserving recipient of the award.
