The United States Men’s National Team had another window to forget in September, and it has cost them in the rankings. Yesterday, FIFA released the September 2024 Men’s Ranking, and the USMNT dropped two spots to 18th. It’s the lowest the USMNT has been in the rankings since they were 20th back in May 2021.
The USMNT lost to Canada and drew New Zealand in the September window, extending their winless streak to 4 matches. This poor run of form was precipitated by losses to Panama and Uruguay in the group stage of Copa América, where they entered as the 11th ranked team in the world and the 3rd highest ranked team in the tournament. They are no longer the highest ranked team in Concacaf, with Mexico remaining in 17th place just a few points ahead of the United States.
The top 10 teams in the world remained unchanged: Argentina, France, Spain, England, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Colombia, and Italy.
The USMNT will take on Panama (#37, down 2 spots) at home on October 12th in what will be the first match for new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. They then travel to take on Mexico in Guadalajara on October 15th, which will put on the line a 5-year unbeaten streak for the United States against Mexico that dates back to September 2019.
