The United States Women’s National Team will take the field tonight against Costa Rica in their final tune-up match before they head to the 2024 Olympics. The USWNT are coming off a 1-0 victory against Mexico over the weekend.
The USWNT look to figure out some of the combinations they could use when they begin the group stage at the Olympics on July 25th. Emma Hayes said that the Mexico match was used to try out some things, and we could see the same thing tonight at Audi Field. This match is the final chance the team will have in competition to build up to the start of the Olympic tournament, and they plan to use it.
With the addition of Lynn Williams to the roster after Catarina Macario was forced to withdraw from the squad due to right knee irritation, the USWNT have a ton of options up front. However, the questions still linger in the midfield combinations and how the team builds some creativity moving forward. Rose Lavelle will be counted on for that, but the rest of the midfielders on the main roster are a bit more defensive-minded. Look for the team to try and figure out who can be the Macario replacement in terms of creativity up front and getting the ball to the forwards who can dazzle, distribute, and dominate.
Costa Rica is hoping to spoil the party, led by captain Raquel Rodríguez. They will seek to pressure the Americans into making mistakes that they can turn into scoring chances. The hope for the USWNT is that on an incredibly hot and humid night, they can still shine through and look good as they get ready to head to France.
