Highly unlikely Miami can afford to re-sign Caleb Martin

According to Barry Jackson, it’s “highly unlikely” that Miami will have the financial flexibility to re-sign Caleb Martin this summer. This is attributed to the Heat’s decision to acquire Terry Rozier’s contract, which limited their ability to utilize certain financial options, including the non-taxpayers midlevel exception. As a result, retaining Martin and retaining Haywood Highsmith will be considerably challenging for the team.

“When the Heat opted to take on the final 2 ½ years of Terry Rozier’s contract in January, it largely eliminated two pools of potential targets this summer: 1). Players who would consider the $12.4 million non taxpayer’s midlevel exception and 2). Players who, for the first time in NBA history, could be traded for that exception. It also made keeping Caleb Martin highly unlikely and retaining Haywood Highsmith far more difficult.”
