Up-and-coming Korn Ferry Tour golfer shoots astonishing 58 in Texas tournament

frankie capan III

Frankie Capan III Breaks Course Record with 58 at Texas Rangers Golf Club

Just two months after Cristobal Del Solar set a Korn Ferry Tour record with a 57, Frankie Capan III has now joined the exclusive club of players shooting sub-60 rounds in a professional tournament. This marks only the second time a player has achieved a 58 in competition on the Korn Ferry Tour.

The 24-year-old from Minnesota made history at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in the Veritex Bank Championship. Taking 29 shots on each nine, Capan III opened with four birdies in his first five holes, adding an eagle on the par-5 9th hole to turn in six-under-par.

Continuing with seven consecutive birdies, he finished with two pars for a round of 58, 13-under-par. Capan III also broke the course record previously set by Scottie Scheffler, the World No.1 and two-time Masters champion, in May 2020.

“It was a lot of fun out there – after the first four, five holes, I just felt really comfortable with my game and where I was at. You know, I’ve been putting a lot of work in the last few weeks and really the last few months just trying to dial a few things in,” he said.

“I think it all kind of came together, which was nice today. And then whenever you’re out there playing well and going low, I really just wanted to keep going as much as I could. I know this course might be gettable the next few days, so just tried to get as many as I could.

“Obviously shooting 58, the course record and all that, that’s cool. I can’t say enough, Rusty and I did a really good job of just kind of staying in the present moment. Yeah, like I said, a lot of fun, but we still have three more days.

“So just kind of taking a lot of positives from today, but taking those into this evening and tomorrow.”

Having only turned professional in 2022, Capan III is just 30 starts into his Korn Ferry Tour career and is currently eligible for coming in the top 75 of the last Korn Ferry Tour Points List. He attended Florida Gulf Coast University and has played in one major championship, the 2023 US Open, where he missed the cut.

Capan III overshadowed fellow American Trent Phillips who shot a superb 61, a round that included three eagles and one on a short par 4. Despite not winning on the Korn Ferry Tour yet, he came close with a tied-third finish at the HomeTown Lenders Championship last April.

During his high school years in Arizona, he worked as a valet and recalls parking cars for renowned golfers like Jon Rahm, Adam Hadwin, and Arron Oberholser.
