Up-and-coming Surrey golfer Kris Kim prepares for PGA Tour debut – Golf News

Surrey amateur star Kris Kim set to make PGA Tour debut - Golf News

Surrey and England amateur sensation Kris Kim is set to make his PGA Tour debut at the upcoming THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, taking place at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas from May 2-5. Kim, a 16-year-old golf prodigy who made waves at last year’s Junior Ryder Cup, will face his biggest golfing challenge in Texas just weeks before his GCSE exams in Surrey.

Kim, a member at Walton Heath Golf Club, had an exceptional 2023 season, clinching victories in prestigious events like the Boys’ Amateur Championship, European Boys’ Individual Championship, and the McGregor Trophy. His standout performance came at the Junior Ryder Cup, where he remained undefeated and contributed significantly to Europe’s victory.

Kris Kim won a trio of prestigious amateur events last year, including the McGregor Trophy

Last year, Kim became the first amateur golfer to be sponsored by the CJ Group from Korea, joining an elite group of tour players under their banner. His experience at the Ryder Cup course has fueled his excitement to compete against golf’s finest, as he gears up for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

“It’s an amazing opportunity, and I can’t wait to play in front of big crowds again”

Kim expressed his enthusiasm for his PGA Tour debut, stating, “I’m thrilled to tee off in Texas. It’s an incredible opportunity. I’m looking forward to playing in front of large crowds again. The Ryder Cup experience was exhilarating, and I’m ready for the challenge ahead.”

Ethan Kim, Director of Sports Marketing at CJ Group, praised Kris’ passion for golf and his ambition to excel in the sport, hoping that his debut in a PGA TOUR event will propel him towards achieving his dreams.

Hailing from a family with ties to top-flight golf, Kim seeks guidance from his mother, Ji-Hyun Suh, a trailblazer in Korean women’s golf, as he prepares to navigate a new competitive environment on the PGA Tour.

Kim is supported by Under Armour and TaylorMade, making him the first European amateur to secure an NIL contract with Under Armour and the first British amateur to ink a similar deal with TaylorMade. These sponsorships will play a crucial role in his journey towards golfing success.

“Under Armour have been a tremendous support to me, and I’m honored to continue our partnership,”

Kim expressed his gratitude towards his sponsors, highlighting the importance of their ongoing support in his career. Kevin Ross, Managing Director at Under Armour EMEA, commended Kris’ work ethic and humble nature, aligning with the values of the brand.

Kim’s admiration for golf legends like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy led him to choose TaylorMade for his equipment, a decision that has fueled his excitement in signing with the renowned brand.

Managed by London-based Trinifold Sports, Kim joins a roster of talented English players, marking his foray into professional golf with strong support and high hopes for the future.
