US Open Champ Coco Gauff Advances to Second Round of the Australian Open

(January 14, 2024) No. 4 Coco Gauff advanced to the second round of the Australian Open on Monday with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia,

The 19-year-old American is looking to claim her second major title after winning the US Open in 2023.

“I was a little nervous the first set,” Gauff said of after a shaky start on court. “I think I did well returning, then I found my serve toward the end (of the set). When I was nervous at 3-3, I told myself: ‘I feel good, I look good, so just have fun’. That was able to relax me a little bit’.”

“She’s a tough player to play but I’m happy with how I was able to manage my emotions today.”

Gauff is now 6-0 on the year, after winning Auckland for a second straight year,

The reigning Wimbledon champ Marketa Vondrousova, the seventh seed, lost to Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 6-2. the seventh seed had pulled out of an Australian Open warm-up tournament in Adelaide due to a hip injury.
