US Soccer recommends denying request to send MLS Next Pro teams to the US Open Cup

US Soccer recommends denying request to send MLS Next Pro teams to the US Open Cup

The latest in the saga of if Major League Soccer should be a league where teams play soccer against other teams took another turn today. The US Soccer Pro League Taskforce has recommended that the federation deny the MLS request to field MLS Next PRO teams in the US Open Cup.

The decision will certainly not improve the bad blood between MLS Commissioner Don Garber and the US Open Cup. If the recommendation stands it’s a victory for the sport of soccer in the country. With the USA set to host the World Cup in just two years, having its top flight teams participate in the USOC continues the legacy of the tournament.

Soccer in the US has come a long way since 1994. MLS is thriving and the NWSL is expanding. Taking MLS teams out of the national federation’s tournament would be a step backwards when the country should be showing how much of a soccer nation it has become.
