US Women’s National Team reveals Olympic roster – Stars and Stripes FC

USWNT Olympic roster released - Stars and Stripes FC

The United States Women’s National Team are ready to go for gold. Today, U.S. Soccer announced the players who will comprise the roster that will compete at the 2024 Olympics.

The roster decisions for the Olympics, which only allows for 18 players and 4 alternates, is always a tough decision for any coach. However, for USWNT head coach Emma Hayes, in her first full month in charge of the team, it was even tougher with an expanded player pool that she only saw in camp once before having to make this decision.

The 4 alternates named to the roster will travel with the team to France for the Olympics and train with the team. However, they will not be on any match rosters nor will they be eligible to receive a medal. Should someone from the main roster need to withdraw due to injury, Emma Hayes can replace that player with one of the alternates up to 24 hours before the team’s opening match against Zambia.

The notable omission for the USWNT was Alex Morgan, who has featured for the United States at the last 3 Olympics. She was not named to the team or the alternates list, with Emma Hayes opting to bring 5 forwards on the main roster and 1 as an alternate.

“Making an Olympic roster is a huge privilege and an honor and there is no denying that it was an extremely competitive process among the players and that there were difficult choices, especially considering how hard everyone has worked over the past 10 months,” Emma Hayes said in a statement.Choosing an 18-player roster plus alternates involved many considerations, but I am excited for the group we have selected and I’m looking forward to building on the work from last camp as we head into the Send-Off matches and then onto France. These are great opportunities for us to continue to show the progress we are making.”
