USA Men’s National Team falls to 16th place in latest FIFA rankings

USMNT drops to 16th in FIFA world rankings

The United States Men’s National Team’s group stage exit at the 2024 Copa America has cost them some spots in the rankings. Today, FIFA released the July 2024 Men’s Ranking, and the USMNT dropped five spots to 16th. It’s the lowest the USMNT has been in the rankings since they were 16th back in October 2022.

The USMNT’s drop was precipitated by losses to Panama and Uruguay in the group stage of Copa América, where they entered as the 11th ranked team in the world and the 3rd highest ranked team in the tournament. They lost 34.77 points in the latest rankings to drop to 16th. Still, they are the highest ranked team in Concacaf, remaining 6 points above 17th ranked Mexico.

The top 10 teams in the world had a few changes: Argentina (Copa América winners), France, Spain (Euro 2024 winners), England, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Colombia, and Italy.

The USMNT will take on Canada (#40, up 8 spots) and Aotearoa New Zealand (#94, up 13 spots) in home friendlies during the September window, while they are scheduled to face Panama (#35, up 8 spots) in a home friendly in October. The USMNT also hope to have a new manager in place by the September international window, and that manager will have the duties of trying to get the team ready to co-host the 2026 World Cup.
