The United States Women’s National Team is back in the top 2. Today, FIFA released their final women’s world ranking of 2023, and the USWNT have moved up 1 spot to #2 in the world.
The USWNT fell from the top spot to #3 after the Women’s World Cup, where they exited in the Round of 16 for the first time. The team that took them out on penalties, Sweden, took the #1 spot at that point with world champions Spain slotting in at #2. Sweden has dropped 4 spots in the ranking released today, with Spain taking the #1 spot and the USA moving up with them to #2.
The USWNT has gone 5W-0L-1D since the Women’s World Cup ended and went 14W-0L-4D in 2023 (games decided via penalties are officially recorded as draws). However, they still dropped a little over 6 points from their August ranking. Not winning the Women’s World Cup for a 3rd straight time was the stain on the entire year, prompting a lot of changes within the program that led to the resignation of Vlatko Andonovski as coach and the hiring of Emma Hayes. Hayes, currently the head coach for Chelsea FC Women, will take over full time after the end of their season in May.
The USWNT will take on Mexico (35th, +1 spot), Argentina (31st, no change), and either Guyana (87th, -2) or the Dominican Republic (107th, -1) in the group stage of the W Gold Cup in February. It will be a chance for them to earn more points as they hope to lift that trophy for the first time.
