The U.S. women’s national team closed its 2023 schedule with a comeback victory over China.
Second-half goals from Sam Coffey and Jaedyn Shaw helped Twila Kilgore’s squad defeat China 2-1 at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday night. The result gave the Americans a confidence boost heading into a busy 2024 year.
Although the USWNT owned the first-half chances, it was China who grabbed a 1-0 lead before halftime. Shen Mengyu scored inside of the box after Wang Siqian missed a headed attempt from a free kick.
Pressure began to mount on the USWNT after Sophia Smith was denied twice while Shaw was also repelled by Xu Huan. However, China’s resistance was eventually broken as Coffey finished off Emily Sonnett’s corner kick for a 1-1 equalizer.
It marked Coffey’s first goal this year for club or country as the 24-year-old looped a right-footed shot into the top-right corner.

Shaw would boost the USWNT in front 2-1 with 11 minutes to play. Jenna Nighswonger’s free kick deflected up in the air off of the China wall, before Smith’s headed pass was played back to the top of the box.
Shaw arrived to drill a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

Jenna Nighswonger, Smith, and Rodman all created late goalscoring opportunities to pad the Americans’ lead, but the USWNT would hang on regardless for a gritty home win.
The USWNT finished 2023 riding a 19-match regulation unbeaten streak which dated back to last year. There has been no announcement yet on when the USWNT’s 2024 schedule will begin, but the annual SheBelieves Cup traditionally occurs in February.
