Amorim Addresses Dyche’s Comments on Man United System
Ruben Amorim has responded to Sean Dyche’s remarks regarding Manchester United’s tactical setup leading up to their match against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Senne Lammens, the United goalkeeper, expressed his gratitude for the fans’ comparisons to legendary shot-stopper Peter Schmeichel, stressing that he is simply “Senne Lammens doing my part for the team.” The 23-year-old joined the club from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day and made his debut in a 2-0 victory over Sunderland on October 4, which initiated a three-match winning streak for the team.
During the Sunderland matchup, Lammens recorded United’s first clean sheet of the season, leading to chants from the Old Trafford crowd asking, “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” He later reflected, “While I don’t pay much attention to it during the game, I saw the reactions afterwards. I am not Schmeichel in disguise; I’m just here to assist the team.
“It’s an incredible compliment to hear, but I must remain realistic. He is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. I still have a long way to prove myself in that conversation.”
After his arrival at United, Lammens missed the initial three matches, during which teammate Altay Bayindir started as goalkeeper. Bayindir’s performances included a narrow victory against Chelsea and two disappointing losses to Manchester City and Brentford.
Lammens acknowledged that allowing him time to settle into life in the Premier League was a wise decision by Amorim. “There was never a strict plan discussed; it was simply a matter of putting forth the best goalkeeper,” he commented. “Initially, I faced some challenges in training. The manager recognized this and allowed me the necessary time to adjust. My first match was the perfect opportunity, and everything since has gone splendidly.”
The goalkeeper mentioned how the defensive pair of Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt contributed to setting realistic expectations for him. “They advised me to not focus on being an extraordinary goalkeeper but instead to be present in critical moments, instilling confidence in the team,” he noted. “This reassurance helps to calm them, knowing there is someone capable behind them.”
On the importance of communication as a goalkeeper, Lammens stated, “A key aspect is aiding the defense through effective communication. I take pride in my composure, but I can also be assertive and encourage my teammates when needed. Balancing both qualities is essential.”
Lammens aims for a lengthy career at United and hopes to eventually be remembered alongside greats such as Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar, and David de Gea. “That would be a wonderful achievement,” he said.
