Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk is facing criticism after an incident during the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, where he was seen chastising teammate Joe Gomez.

The confrontation occurred in a heated second half at Parc des Princes, resulting in a 2-0 loss for Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk under fire for criticizing Joe Gomez

Former England keeper Paul Robinson expressed his disapproval on BBC Radio 5 Live, highlighting that Van Dijk’s tendency to publicly admonish his teammates is becoming a concerning trend.

“Once again, Virgil van Dijk is criticizing his teammates. There was no justification for him to call out Joe Gomez for not overlapping,” Robinson stated.

While Gomez has been a dependable partner for Van Dijk in the past, PSG’s Kvicha Kvaratskhelia seized upon the defensive miscommunication moments later, scoring the second goal for the French side.

Current club atmosphere is troubling

This behavior is seen by many as indicative of a larger issue at Anfield.

Following a recent 4-0 FA Cup defeat against Manchester City, where Van Dijk admitted the team “gave up,” the fractures within the squad are becoming increasingly visible.

With a total of 16 losses in all competitions this season, the pressure on manager Arne Slot is mounting.

Supporters have been leaving matches early, calls for Slot’s dismissal are rising, and incidents like midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai’s confrontation with fans only add to the growing unrest, alongside Van Dijk’s open discontent with his teammates.

As Liverpool prepares to return to Merseyside for the second leg, they face the daunting challenge of overturning a two-goal deficit against the reigning European champions.
