Van Dijk Fires Back at Rooney's Criticism: 'It's Just Lazy!'n

Van Dijk Responds to Rooney’s Comments: ‘It’s Just Lazy Criticism’

Virgil van Dijk reacted to Wayne Rooney’s recent critique, where the Manchester United icon suggested that Liverpool has been lacking leadership this season. Van Dijk described Rooney’s remarks as “lazy,” asserting that the team is committed to working together.

During a recent appearance on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England striker pointed fingers at both Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, claiming their body language this season hasn’t been up to par. After Liverpool’s 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa, Van Dijk addressed these comments.

“I didn’t notice his opinions last year,” Van Dijk remarked. “It’s not something that bothers me. I’d like to refer to him as a legend, a player who has inspired countless others.

“I can only say good things, but to me, that comment seems like a bit of lazy criticism. It’s simple to blame the players, but he knows as well as anyone that we all pull together to help each other succeed,” he added.

With goals from Salah and Ryan Gravenberch, Liverpool ended a streak of four consecutive Premier League defeats against Aston Villa. This victory has propelled Liverpool to third place in the league, trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points.

“It was a solid performance,” noted Van Dijk. “We worked hard as a team. Defending is a collective effort—attackers, midfielders, and defenders all contribute to that clean sheet, which is crucial. Our quality in scoring was evident, and now it’s about moving forward.”

“I aim to perform not just for myself but for the entire squad and the club. I want to win matches. I’ve been fortunate to claim many victories at this club, particularly at home. In tough times, I strive to support my teammates,” he concluded.
