Liverpool Players Hold Meeting Following Loss to Manchester United
Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, revealed that the squad convened for a players-only meeting after suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United on Sunday. The team aimed to break their four-game losing streak, a trend that concluded with a convincing 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Head coach Arne Slot led the team to its first win since leaving behind a Carabao Cup triumph against Southampton on September 23. The squad showed resilience by overcoming an early deficit in Germany to secure the win.
After the setback against United, Liverpool has seen its status drop to fourth place in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by four points. In preparation for the match against Eintracht, Van Dijk emphasized the value of the team meeting aimed at tackling the challenges that contributed to their recent struggles.
“On Monday, the mood was low following our loss to Manchester United at Anfield,” said Van Dijk during a media briefing. “Losing at home is not something we do often, and it was tough to take.” He added, “We gathered not as a crisis meeting, but rather to assess our situation and understand how quickly things can turn around.”
As Liverpool approached the game against Eintracht, they sought to avoid a fifth consecutive loss, a feat not seen in over seven decades. Van Dijk noted the importance of maintaining focus amidst external criticism during their troubled run. “Four straight losses are not something anyone wants to face,” he remarked. “Still, we needed to keep calm and disregard outside noise, which is beyond our control.”
He stressed, “The path forward lies in unity, staying concentrated on our goals, and fostering confidence. These ideals are easier said than done, but they’re essential if we aim to move past this.”
Wirtz, a summer recruit valued at £100 million, played a key role in the turnaround against Frankfurt, contributing two assists—his first since the Community Shield loss against Crystal Palace. With some questioning his impact at Liverpool, Van Dijk urged Wirtz to remain steadfast against public scrutiny. “Criticism is part of playing at Liverpool; he needs to embrace it while focusing on our expectations,” he stated.
