Vela, Lodeiro, Crepeau headline top MLS free agents to watch

Each year, MLS clubs immerse themselves in free agency, actively pursuing key additions to strengthen their rosters in preparation for the upcoming season, all in the quest to make an MLS Cup run.

Since its inception in 2015, the player pool has consistently improved, boasting increasing talent each year. From Carlos Vela to Maxime Crepeau, the current pool of MLS free agents might go down as one of the more productive groups of players.

With the new MLS free agency window already open, a plethora of talent emerges, providing teams with the opportunity to address gaps in their rosters.

Here are five top MLS free agents to watch this winter:

Carlos Vela

Carlos Vela, a legendary figure at LAFC and a former MLS MVP, has the potential to immediately enhance majority of the league’s offensive units.

While last season saw a slight dip in Vela’s statistics, it wasn’t a significant decline. Despite being 34-years-old, Vela managed to contribute with nine goals and 12 assists in 34 games played. These numbers are respectable for a free agent, although they may not be the most outstanding given his previously approximated $4.3 million in guaranteed compensation. 

Keep an eye on teams like the Houston Dynamo, San Jose Earthquakes, and the LA Galaxy, as they may be inclined to pursue Vela. The former Mexican international could prove valuable in addressing roster and marketing gaps for these clubs. 

Nicolas Lodeiro

Much like Carlos Vela, Nicolas Lodeiro finds himself in a similar situation.

Having achieved nearly everything possible with the Sounders, Lodeiro possesses a winning mentality and can still contribute valuable minutes to a team on the verge of contending for MLS Cup and CONCACAF Champions Cup glory. Recognizing the need for change, the Sounders aimed to remove Lodeiro’s approximate $3.3 million in guaranteed compensation from their books.

Keep an eye on teams like Orlando City, Houston Dynamo, and St. Louis CITY SC, as they may actively pursue Lodeiro to fortify their offense. The former Uruguayan International and MLS Newcomer of the Year could be a significant asset for these teams, all of whom who will be involved in the newly revamped Champions Cup.

Maxime Crepeau

This is a rare scenario where a player has had an exceptional season but finds themselves on the free agency list.

In the case of Maxime Crepeau, the Canadian goalkeeper is likely seeking a salary increase. Despite being a top-tier MLS goalkeeper in recent years, earning approximately $378,000 suggests he’s undervalued in MLS. With an MLS Cup title under his belt with LAFC and a recent appearance in the finals, the 29-year-old has proven to be crucial with significant saves for the club.

Crepeau, known for his prowess in stopping shots, would be a valuable addition for many of MLS’ contenders.

Griffin Dorsey

From getting awes and admiration from Lionel Messi himself, to unexpectedly finding a place on the free agency list, the year has been a rollercoaster for Griffin Dorsey.

Similar to Crepeau, Dorsey is seeking a well-deserved pay raise ahead of the 2024 season. With an approximate guaranteed compensation of $165,000 last year, Dorsey should undoubtedly be on the radar of almost every team this year.

As one of the main catalysts for Ben Olsen’s Houston Dynamo, Dorsey played a pivotal role in helping the team secure their second U.S. Open Cup trophy. He emerged as a focal point during crucial moments in the MLS Cup Playoffs, showing his versatility across the pitch in a number of different roles.

Jonathan Mensah

The captain of the 2020 MLS Cup-winning Columbus Crew faced a difficult beginning to the 2023 season.

Jonathan Mensah, who underwent an early-season trade, encountered a diminishing level of favor under Luchi Gonzalez at the San Jose Earthquakes. Despite the setbacks, Mensah remains a potentially valuable asset for any emerging team in need of leadership and a robust presence along the backline.

With an approximate guaranteed compensation of $1.2 million for the Earthquakes last season, Mensah’s significant salary on the bench made for an expensive substitute. The decision to bench Mensah wasn’t solely based on performance, as he faced repercussions for team violations, resulting in one missed game. Subsequently, Mensah lost his starting position to Tanner Beason, a player who didn’t necessarily outshine Mensah. 

Austin FC, New England Revolution, and DC United are among several clubs that could use centerback help leading into 2024.
