Venus Williams Withdraws from Atlanta Open Sunday Match

Venus Williams Forced To Withdraw From Atlanta Open Sunday Showdown

Venus Williams was supposed to make her return to tennis at the 2024 Atlanta Open as part of the Sunday Showdown, but unfortunately, she won’t be able to play due to another injury setback.

Williams has been absent from the tennis scene for some time. Her last competitive match was at the Miami Open, where she faced and lost to Diana Shanider. Since then, the American has been diligently working on her fitness to make a comeback, which was expected to happen at the ATP tournament in Atlanta.

She had agreed to an exhibition match against Sloane Stephens in May, which was scheduled to coincide with the Atlanta Open. Unfortunately, spectators will not witness that match now as Williams’ injury setback has ruled her out of the Sunday Showdown.

Originally set for July 21st, the Sunday Showdown will proceed with another player taking Williams’ spot. Sloane Stephens will now face Taylor Townsend. Williams issued a statement expressing her regret for not being able to compete.

“Regret to inform you that I will not be able to participate in this final installment of the Sunday Showdown during the Atlanta Open. During one of my practice sessions, I unfortunately aggravated my abdomen, which will require rest and treatment.”

The injury setback necessitates rest and recovery for Williams. Fans are hopeful for her swift return to the tennis courts, especially with the US Open on the horizon, as missing her home Grand Slam would be a significant blow for the seasoned player.

“I have enjoyed being able to play in Atlanta over the years and sincerely do hope to have the opportunity to return soon. I am nevertheless saddened that I will not be able to participate in this final edition of the Atlanta Open Sunday Showdown.”
