The New York Giants are continuing to look to build up their roster.
One of the latest moves that they have made is the signing of free-agent cornerback Tre Herndon.
After going undrafted out of Vanderbilt, Herndon found a home with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018.
He would go on to spend the next six years there before signing with the Giants.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the team made the addition after Herndon’s minicamp tryout.
More of a role player, Herndon has started 34 career games out of the 83 that he has played in during his NFL career.
His best season came in 2019 when he started 14 games for Jacksonville.
That year, he recorded a career-high 13 pass deflections and 55 combined tackles.
The following season, he set a career-high in tackles with 76.
Over the next few seasons with the team, he would not record more than 50 tackles in a season with his role diminishing.
Now, he heads to a younger team in need of some more veteran leadership.
Starting cornerbacks Cor’Dale Flott and Deonte Banks are both still under 25 years of age and have not played more than two seasons in the league.
The addition of Herndon should help out with depth and on special steams.
This is not a world-beating addition that immediately turns the Giants into Super Bowl contenders given the way the offense has performed recently.
But, he should provide more leadership and depth.
It is a good, cheap signing for Big Blue heading into 2024.
