Veteran Forward Joe Pavelski Announces Retirement After 18 Seasons in NHL

Joe Pavelski Unofficially Retires, 18-Year NHL Career Over

Dallas Stars’ forward Joe Pavelski did not formally announce his retirement on Tuesday, but he did indicate that this past season was likely his final NHL season. During a media interview as the Stars cleaned out their lockers, Pavelski said, “This is it for me.” Although he mentioned it’s not official official, he expressed that it has been known for a while that this would be his last season. He stated, “The plan is not to play next season.”

It appears that Pavelski’s 18-year NHL career is wrapping up in Dallas.

Pavelski mentioned that he is taking his time to make a decision and doesn’t officially confirm that he will retire. However, after a lengthy career, he struggled in the postseason this year, only managing one goal and four points in 19 playoff games. Despite scoring 27 goals and earning 67 points during the regular season, this might not be the desired end to his career. Nonetheless, his achievements are commendable.

Previously seen as the ageless wonder in the NHL, Pavelski remained productive even at the age of 39, signing contracts with the Stars that compensated him well. As an impending unrestricted free agent, the chances of securing another lucrative contract were low.

Originally a 7th-round overage pick in 2003, Pavelski has had an impressive NHL career, which many argue merits a spot in the Hall of Fame. Over 18 seasons with the Stars and San Jose Sharks, the Wisconsin native accumulated 1,332 career NHL games, registering 761 points (355 goals, 406 assists) in 963 games with the Sharks. He also contributed 100 points (48 goals, 52 assists) in 134 playoff appearances.

His specialty in deflections in front of the net will be a memorable aspect of his legacy.
