Not so long ago, the Carolina Panthers had one of the best running backs in the game.
But with Christian McCaffrey no longer on the premises, they have to get creative to find success on the ground.
With that in mind, they added a veteran to their roster.
According to a report by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN (via Ari Meirov), they’ve agreed to a deal with Rashaad Penny.
Penny was a first-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks back in 2018.
He’ll now be reunited with new Panthers head coach Dave Canales, who was an offensive assistant coach for the Seahawks for 12 years between 2010-22.
The 28-year-old back hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations that come with being a former first-round pick.
He was only able to make three appearances last season for the Philadelphia Eagles, logging 33 yards on 11 carries.
In six years, he’s logged 1,951 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he’ll most likely be out there as an insurance policy to provide depth behind Chuba Hubbard and rookie Jonathon Brooks.
This will be a crucial season for the Panthers.
Bryce Young didn’t look good at all in his first season, and they hope that Canales can bring the best out of him.
Nonetheless, they will also need to establish the run for that to happen, which is why there are some serious concerns about their unimpressive RB room.
Even so, sometimes all a player needs is a change of scenery, and Canales clearly knows Penny and how to bring the best out of him.
