Victor Wembanyama has received medical clearance to resume basketball activities following a shoulder blood clot that cut his rookie season short.
The 21-year-old Spurs sensation shared the good news while attending the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Speaking with Maxime Aubin from the French outlet L’Équipe, he said, “I’m officially cleared to return. It just happened—I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just a few hours ago (last Friday). Phew, I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again!”

Wembanyama was sidelined back in February when he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The clot was discovered shortly after his participation in the NBA All-Star Game, where he reported experiencing discomfort in his arm. Further testing confirmed the diagnosis.
The Spurs consistently expressed optimism about Wembanyama’s return in time for the 2025-26 season, although they couldn’t provide a specific timeline. Treatment for deep vein thrombosis typically involves blood thinners, which can complicate return-to-play estimates.
In April, the towering seven-foot-four player gave a hopeful update regarding his recovery. “We’re taking our time,” Wembanyama said at the time. “I’m neither late nor early, but it’s a process.”
Wembanyama attended Summer League games from the sidelines but has not participated in any on-court activities since the diagnosis. The Spurs will now focus on getting their franchise cornerstone back into game shape as training camp approaches later this year.
