The Minnesota Vikings will open the 2024 NFL season when they take on the New York Giants.

The Vikings underwent a bit of a makeover this offseason as they saw Kirk Cousins depart in free agency for the Atlanta Falcons, leaving a gaping hole at quarterback.

Minnesota managed to sign journeyman Sam Darnold and added J.J. McCarthy in the 2024 NFL Draft.

However, McCarthy needed season-ending knee surgery to fix a torn meniscus, which means Darnold will handle starting duties.

He at least has the benefit of a strong supporting cast, headlined by wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, and a running game featuring both Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler.

Ahead of the season opener, the Vikings announced two roster moves.

“Vikings elevated RB Myles Gaskin and S Bobby McCain to the active roster for Sunday’s game vs. the Giants,” NFL insider Adam Schefter wrote on X.

Myles Gaskin will serve as a backup running back for Minnesota, while McCain should see some time on special teams.

The 53-man roster for Minnesota is largely set, and these moves are meant to provide some additional security and depth in the event of an injury.

Though the Vikings may struggle in their first regular season game with Darnold under center, the most important thing is establishing an identity and figuring out which pieces to build around going forward.
