2023 is drawing to a close, and it’s a great time to roll back the tape and enjoy some of the best goals USMNT players have scored for their clubs this year.
I went back through the tape and watched hundreds of goals, both at home and abroad. Here’s a dozen candidates, in chronological order. At the bottom of this article, you can vote for your top 5 favorites. We’ll use a ranked-choice voting method to award the winner.
January 21 – Alejandro Zendejas vs Puebla
Alejandro Zendejas had some ups and downs with the USMNT in 2023, but man was he effective for Club América. This volley was superb. The atmosphere at the Azteca doesn’t hurt either.
January 22 – Gio Reyna vs Augsburg
What a moment for Gio. This was the game-winner for Dortmund.
February 1 – Folarin Balogun vs Lorient
This was the goal of the year for me. Just an unreal volley from Balo, and it was his third goal of the game. You’ll have to click the link to watch this one on YouTube.
August 21 – Christian Pulisic vs Bologna
Pulisic’s blast from outside the box was the perfect way to start his season with AC Milan. Not only that, his shout of “C’mon baby!” at Rafael Leão became a mainstay for Milan’s announcer as the season went on.
September 3 – Sam Vines vs Union St. Gilloise
It’s been a tough year for Sam Vines. He’s struggled with injuries, plus he wasn’t able to play at all for Antwerp in Champions League. This goal sure was nice, though.
September 30 – Folarin Balogun vs Marseille
Another exquisite finish from Flo. He had almost no time or space, but created it for himself and rocketed it home.
October 6 – Joe Scally vs Mainz
Will Joe Scally ever score a better goal? He looped it in over the goalkeeper from way outside the box. It took everyone by surprise.
October 7 – Christian Pulisic vs Genoa
This goal was a special one, as it went from American to American. Pulisic deftly controlled Musah’s cross, swiveled, and smashed it home.
October 21 – Duncan McGuire vs Toronto FC
Oh man. This was unreal. If Big Dunc hadn’t announced himself before this, he certainly did here. Juggles the ball over Michael Bradley’s head and then SMASHES it with the outside of his foot from distance.
October 25 – John Tolkin vs Charlotte FC
There weren’t many direct free kicks scored this year, but Tolkin provided a special one here. Up and over the wall.
November 29 – Ricardo Pepi vs Sevilla
Pepi’s game-winner secured PSV’s advancing out of their Champions League group. What a moment.
December 2 – Christian Pulisic vs Frosinone
The skill from Pulisic here is sublime. His first touch is out of this world. It gives him a chance, but even then the finish isn’t easy. Well done.
So, what are your favorites? Vote here! You don’t have to pick 5 goals, only as many as you want to.
