Wayne Rooney Advocates for Michael Carrick as Manchester United’s Next Permanent Manager
Wayne Rooney has shown his strong support for Michael Carrick to take on the role of permanent manager at Manchester United, following a convincing 3-1 win against Aston Villa. This victory at Old Trafford has cemented United’s position in third place and sparked increased discussion about Carrick’s qualifications for the managerial position.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live after the match, Rooney expressed his unwavering confidence in his former teammate’s abilities. He stated that Carrick’s influence goes beyond just tactical adjustments, highlighting the renewed sense of unity within the team.
Rooney pointed out Carrick’s impressive start, noting that his win percentage outshines that of previous renowned managers at the club. He commented:
“Without a doubt, he should be given the position. I saw this coming for Michael Carrick. I know him well—I understand his character and personality. The team required someone calm, yet familiar with the environment and capable of offering support, and he has delivered on that front.”
“We’ve noticed the players showcasing better quality and cohesion, and they appear to be a resilient side. So why would anyone want to make a change?”
“He boasts the highest win percentage of any Manchester United manager after such a short number of matches. In my opinion, he deserves the job.”
Michael Carrick’s Case for the Manager’s Role Strengthens
The numbers certainly back up Rooney’s “no-brainer” assertion. Since Carrick assumed his role in mid-January, he has led the Red Devils to seven victories, one draw, and only one loss across nine Premier League games.
This impressive record has enabled United to amass 22 points out of a possible 27, turning them from a seventh-place team into contenders for a Champions League position.
Sunday’s win over Villa marked Carrick’s seventh victory in nine games. Despite Ross Barkley’s equalizer in the second half, United maintained their composure, with goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha, and substitute Benjamin Sesko sealing the win.
Bruno Fernandes also made headlines by setting a club record with 16 assists in a single season, contributing to a positive atmosphere at Carrington, shifting from a crisis to one of confidence.
While reports suggest the board is considering a shortlist of five candidates, including Roberto De Zerbi, Rooney believes the ideal choice is already in front of them.
