Weaver appointed as assistant coach for the Men’s U20 team by Ice Hockey UK

Former Great Britain defenceman Jonathan Weaver has been appointed as Assistant Coach of the men’s under-20s.

Weaver won 97 international caps – seventh on Great Britain’s all-time list – and scored 68 points which included 21 goals and 47 assists.

After making his full debut for GB in 1998, the Sunderland-born defenceman went on to win four silver and two bronze medals with the national team.

In his final season for GB, he was part of the side that won the gold medal and promotion on home ice in Belfast in 2017.

He also spent six years as Great Britain captain.

The 47-year-old links-up with Head Coach Martin Grubb and fellow assistant Tommy Watkins.

“I am honoured to take-up this role with the men’s under-20s,” said Weaver.

“I am excited to work with the next generation of young players and also work with Martin and Tommy.

“I played against them both in my career and we all know each other well.

“I am passionate about helping this talented crop of players succeed and can’t wait to get started.”

Andy Partridge, Head of Performance for Ice Hockey UK, said: “Jonathan is one of the best-ever players to ice for GB and was so successful for the national team and domestically as well.

“The players in the system will certainly benefit from his experience both on and off the ice. This appointment further strengthens our coaching system.

“With what the coaches have planned to help support and prepare the GB Under-20s this year, we are extremely excited to see how the team perform in the World Championship in Croatia next year.”
