When Was Jordan Travis Selected in the 2024 NFL Draft?
Travis was selected with the No. 171 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
It’s right around where many outlets projected him to go despite tantalizing physical tools and playmaking ability. A season-ending injury suffered late last season that kept Travis off the field for Florida State’s regular-season finale may well have kept the Seminoles out of the College Football Playoff.
Still, Travis’ productive track record speaks for itself, with 5,970 passing yards for 44 touchdowns and seven interceptions, alongside 14 rushing touchdowns in 24 games over the last two seasons.
What Does the Jets’ QB Depth Chart Look Like With Travis?
Travis is the latest addition to a Jets quarterback room full of players with potential injury concerns.
Aaron Rodgers returns as the team’s starter for 2024 after exiting with a season-ending Achilles injury just three plays into the 2023 campaign. The 40-year-old signal-caller is not far removed from a run of healthy and productive seasons in 2018-2022, but it’s unclear what New York can expect from him in 2024.
The Jets also traded Zach Wilson to the Denver Broncos on April 22 after an underwhelming year as the team’s main starter once Rodgers went down.
New York does have veteran help in the room, however, after signing Tyrod Taylor to a two-year contract in free agency. The 13-year NFL veteran has bounced around quite a bit during his time in the league. Taylor’s been productive at times as a starter, but he’s largely been a spot-option backup, with injuries at times hindering his availability.
Travis looks poised to be the Jets’ third-string option at this point as he continues recovering from the broken leg sustained in a game against North Alabama. New York also signed Darren Grainger out of Georgia State as an undrafted free agent, however, giving the Jets another option to consider in the lead up to the 2024 campaign.
Regardless, Travis looks poised to have a chance to learn behind veteran options before potentially getting his opportunity down the line.
Travis’ NFL Draft Scouting Report
Despite those injury concerns, Travis’ growth in college made him an intriguing NFL prospect as a backup option and potential spot starter, depending on how everything shakes out.
Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings highlighted plenty of the positives with Travis in his scouting report of the QB:
“Travis’ arm strength is only above average at best. He’ll also be 24 years old as a rookie. But outside of those notes, he’s a smart, competitive, and well-rounded presence whose athleticism and creation capacity are at the very pinnacle of his position group.
“Travis doesn’t have notable arm strength or velocity, but he does have hyper-elite mobility. He’s an incredibly explosive athlete with instant burst, searing agility and quickness, and speed. He also has the high-level arm elasticity to elongate throwing windows, mix pace and touch, and operate off-platform.
“In the pocket, Travis is a capable operator. He’s a good processor and decision-maker who shows malleability and discretion on a situational basis. His athleticism translates to easy pocket mobility and evasive freedom, and he has stellar mechanical feel, which helps contribute to good overall accuracy and situational precision as a passer.”
