Moreno: Bayern Munich Reigns Supreme in the Bundesliga

Commenting on the Bundesliga weekly is a delight for various reasons, one of the most significant being the recognition that one is covering a league known for its attacking flair and high standards.

This week, I reflected on the standout attackers of the Bundesliga this season. My selections are subjective and based on the current form I’ve observed, so there may be a few surprising inclusions.

1. Harry Kane | Bayern Munich | 14 goals in 11 matches, 3 assists

It’s no surprise that the England captain is leading the charge as an outstanding addition to Bayern Munich. Kane plays with a sense of ease and enjoyment, showcasing his talents week in and week out. He has been a constant threat to opposing defenses in a league that he is clearly passionate about.

Kane had an explosive start, scoring a stunning hat-trick in his opening match against RB Leipzig and adding another three goals in a subsequent game against TSG Hoffenheim. With versatile skills — from being a precise scorer to a brilliant playmaker — he is far ahead in goal tally. Should he maintain his fitness, he might just eclipse Robert Lewandowski’s record of 41 goals in a single season, set in 2019-20.

2. Michael Olise | Bayern Munich | 6 goals in 11 matches, 6 assists

At just 23 years old, Olise is a technically gifted France international, capable of executing plays reminiscent of Arjen Robben during his prime at Bayern. Defenders find it challenging to prevent him from cutting in from the right onto his powerful left foot.

Olise opened the season with the first goal against Leipzig, scoring twice in the same match. He continued his impressive form by contributing two goals in Bayern’s recent 6-2 victory over SC Freiburg, showcasing his capability this season with six assists, placing him on track to replicate his 15-assist tally from the previous campaign.

3. Jonathan Burkardt | Eintracht Frankfurt | 8 goals in 10 matches

During Eintracht’s exciting 4-3 victory against FC Cologne, I noted how Burkardt’s two goals demonstrated his scoring prowess. A former Mainz striker, he has shown flashes of brilliance that evoke comparisons to Kane, although he is still developing his game. With three braces in just five appearances, his form suggests that he has even more potential ahead of him. As a young German talent, he could play a significant role in next summer’s World Cup in North America.

4. Said El Mala | FC Cologne | 4 goals in 11 matches, 2 assists

Cologne coach Lukas Kwasniok has praised the 19-year-old El Mala as his “golden boy,” and it’s easy to understand why. The talent scouted from 3. Liga has been making waves in the Bundesliga with impressive performances. Primarily operating from the left side of the attack, he has been brought on as a substitute to limit his workload while still contributing memorable goals.

El Mala has already received his first call-up to the German national team, signifying a bright future ahead for this young star.

5. Assan Ouédráogo | RB Leipzig | 3 goals in 11 matches

Though I considered including Bayern’s Luis Díaz among my top five, a recent dip in form led me to highlight Ouédráogo, another promising German talent. After transitioning into Leipzig’s starting lineup, he has begun to thrive and recently made his debut for the national team, scoring just two minutes after coming on—a record-breaking feat.

Unfortunately, Ouédráogo is now set for a period of recovery due to a knee injury sustained in a match against Werder Bremen. Optimism remains that he will return to enhance his team’s performance in North America.
