How Long Has Brandon Staley Been the Chargers Head Coach?
Staley didn’t have to trek far to take over the head coaching reins for the Bolts. Immediately after constructing the league’s best defense in 2020 with the Los Angeles Rams, he hopped over to L.A.’s other franchise.

Staley didn’t offer the type of sound bytes that most NFL reporters hope for, which includes the over-the-top yet motivational quotes Dan Campbell gave when he was hired by the Detroit Lions.
Staley, who was hired around the same time as Campbell, gave more coach speak and brought a high-powered exotic defensive scheme that NFL offenses had difficulty trying to crack.
In what looks like a 4-1 box set look, Staley still brings multiple rushers from the outside linebackers to the safeties. In simpler terms, his defense wants to outnumber ball carriers plus load and cause confusion.
His first two Charger defenses have yet to climb higher than 20th in yards allowed.
Who Was the Head Coach Before Staley?
Staley succeeded Anthony Lynn, who spent four seasons with the Bolts.
Lynn’s first two seasons saw promise — with the Chargers going 9-7 and then 12-4 in Year 2. Lynn’s 12-win Bolts team lost in the AFC Divisional round of the 2018 season.
Lynn’s Charger teams from there missed the playoffs with records of 5-11 and 7-9.
What Is Staley’s Record with the Chargers?
Staley is currently above .500 with a 19-16 overall mark.
His first Chargers team was in the final mix for a postseason berth. However, the Bolts dramatically missed the postseason with the overtime loss to the Las Vegas Raider.
Then last season, Staley and the Chargers’ season ended with a botched 27-point lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars and falling 31-30.
Now, with a new offensive coordinator in place in Kellen Moore, the league’s richest quarterback Justin Herbert, and the return of integral veterans like Kellen Moore, Austin Ekeler, and Khalil Mack, Staley is under more pressure than ever before to erase the recent string of final misfortunes for the Bolts.
Has Staley Ever Won a Super Bowl?
Turns out Staley missed out on winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy with old pals Sean McVay, Les Snead, and the Rams.
He was hired before the 2021 season…the same year the Rams won it all.
He’s been an NFL coach since 2017 with previous stops in Chicago (2017-2018) and Denver (2019). None of the Bears and Broncos teams went to the Super Bowl. Staley was on an ’18 Bears staff under Matt Nagy that went 12-4 but lost in the wildcard round. The lone Broncos team he was a part of under Vic Fangio finished 7-9.
That one season with the Rams in 2020 was his first taste of the NFL postseason for Staley — which saw L.A. pull the road upset of the Seattle Seahawks only to be eliminated by the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round.
