Manchester United’s Director Discusses Team Building Strategy
On November 5, 2025, Jason Wilcox, the director of football for Manchester United, emphasized the club’s commitment to forming a dedicated and industrious team under coach Ruben Amorim, steering away from a more flamboyant approach likened to the “Harlem Globetrotters.”
Last season, Manchester United finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League, marking their lowest position in the top division since 1974. Additionally, they suffered a defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, resulting in increased scrutiny of the club and its personnel.
The team has since revamped its roster, seeing prominent players like Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford depart, while welcoming new talents such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens.
Currently, under Amorim’s guidance, the revamped squad sits in eighth place, just two points behind second-placed Manchester City. Wilcox remains optimistic, asserting that the summer transfers will bolster their efforts to reclaim a top position.
Wilcox stated, “Signing the appropriate characters is crucial. We need players who are eager to develop, work well with others, and comprehend the essence of being part of a winning team.” He articulated that the objective is not to construct a team solely filled with star players; rather, it’s about integrating committed individuals who embody the spirit of the club.
He remarked on the importance of a mix of functional players and mavericks, referencing Eric Cantona as a prime example of a professional who was passionate about the club.
Looking ahead, Wilcox commended the team’s recent acquisitions, noting the seamless integration of players like Cunha and Mbeumo into the squad, alongside the promising goalkeeper Lammens, who had been a target of their scouting department for an extended period.
As Manchester United prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2028, ambition remains high to secure the Premier League title.

Reflecting on the previous summer transfer window, Wilcox said, “Last year’s window was chaotic, whereas this one has been systematic and calm. We had a clear strategy, targeted players, and identified areas that required enhancement.”
He explained that regular consultations take place within the recruitment team to establish player profiles that meet the club’s needs, ensuring a cohesive effort in signing players and maintaining professional standards throughout the selection process.
