Nikolaj Ehlers, Winnipeg Jets winger, has been a key player for the franchise, but with his contract expiring soon, there are discussions about his future with the team. As he nears free agency in 2025, questions arise about whether the Jets will extend his contract or consider trading him.
Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff addressed the speculation surrounding Ehlers’ future, indicating that talks about a possible trade have been ongoing. He mentioned that a decision on Ehlers’ contract could come at different times, stating, “It may be something we address at the end of the year, it may be something that gets addressed sooner.”
“There’s always constant communication with different agents and different situations,” Cheveldayoff added. Ehlers, on the other hand, mentioned at a team golf event that there were no new developments since the exit meetings.
Cheveldayoff and Ehlers emphasized that at present, their focus remains on playing and winning, with a priority on what is best for the team.

Can the Jets Afford to Sign Ehlers?
The financial aspect of Ehlers’ next contract remains uncertain, but with an expected raise from his current $6 million AAV, there are concerns about the Jets’ ability to retain him. With Kyle Connor also approaching free agency, it might be challenging for Cheveldayoff to keep both players if they demand high salaries.
Whether Ehlers becomes a trade asset or stays to aid in the Jets’ playoff push is a key narrative for the 2024-25 season. Despite limited ice time, he continues to be an impactful player, hinting at a potential trade market for him.
