Wimbledon Park Project Approved by AELTC

Wimbledon | AELTC Wimbledon Park Project gets the green light

The All England Lawn Tennis Club has received approval from the Greater London Authority to move forward with its Wimbledon Park Project proposal. This will involve building 39 new courts, including an 8,000-seat show court, on the former Wimbledon Park Golf Club adjacent to its current site, nearly tripling its size. The club is committed to delivering every stage of the project with attention to detail, respect for neighbors, and the environment.

Deborah Jevans, Chair of the All England Club, expressed excitement about the approval, highlighting the significant benefits the development will bring to the community and the opportunity to host the qualifying competition for The Championships on-site. The project aims to transform the former golf course into 27 acres of new parkland and create economic and employment opportunities.

London’s Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration, and the Fire Service, Jules Pipe CBE, made the decision to approve the project following a public consultation and recommendation from GLA planning officers. This move clears the way for the All England Club to proceed with its plans for expansion, bringing one of London’s greatest sporting transformations since the 2012 Games.

The Mayor of London’s office took over the application process after Merton Council approved the plans and Wandsworth Council rejected them. Despite objections and protests, the approval from the Greater London Authority signals a significant step forward for the All England Club in securing its future as a top sporting destination.
