Frustration for Manchester United’s Manager Amid Broadcasting Changes
Marc Skinner, the head coach of Manchester United, has expressed his concerns regarding the broadcasting arrangements in the Women’s Super League (WSL). His frustration arose after a planned mid-game interview coincided with his team’s first goal concession during their 3-0 loss to Manchester City.
The match at Etihad Stadium saw City seize control in the first half, netting three goals and maintaining their lead at the top of the league table, four points clear of Chelsea, who will be facing Liverpool on Sunday.
Skinner was preparing for a new in-game interview format introduced by the league and broadcasters this season but had to forgo it as Rebecca Knaak’s goal changed the dynamic of the match. “There was a moment when I was on the headset, and I couldn’t use it. I heard the commentary and couldn’t respond,” he commented, clearly upset with the situation.
He added, “We need to refine the process and timings. I was geared up for a live interview, but the moment I tuned in, I was caught off guard by the goal. I couldn’t communicate with my team.” Skinner acknowledges the value of enhanced fan engagement but believes the system should not interfere with coaching responsibilities during matches.
“While I appreciate the strategy behind these interviews, the execution needs work. I genuinely want to connect with fans, but we need to assess how this can function better in real-time,” he continued.
Both Renee Slegers of Arsenal and Jocelyn Precheur of London City Lionesses have expressed similar opinions about mid-game interviews at the season’s opening match. The league mandates that managers conduct only one of these interviews throughout the season.
This latest defeat marks United’s second straight loss in the WSL, following a surprising 1-0 setback against Aston Villa last weekend. Despite Manchester City holding a commanding seven-point lead, Skinner remains optimistic about his team’s chances. “We will see how the season unfolds. I believe we can close the distance,” he stated confidently.
“I don’t view them as exceptionally better. They have a strong forward line, but I think catching them is possible. We just need to bridge the gap,” Skinner added.
