New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres is a very solid hitter.

He has a .780 OPS for his career, and had a .800 mark with 25 home runs last year.

That’s why it’s so shocking to see him slumping like this.

The talented second baseman is hitting a meager .193/.299/.217 with no home runs and a .516 OPS.

Those numbers have been a drag for the Yankees offense and are starting to get into the player’s head.

He has every intention of getting out of his funk, though.

In fact, he is working extra hours to try and get into a rhythm at the plate.

“Gleyber Torres, hitting .193, is out for some early soft toss with James Rowson and Casey Dykes,” Yankees insider Gary Phillips tweeted.

You could say Torres is getting back to the basics.

Perhaps the Yankees’ hitting coaches wanted to spot something on his mechanics, or maybe they are trying to clear his head.

The fact remains that if the Yankees are serious about a deep postseason run this year, they need the pending free agent to return to form.

Torres has every motivation to put up the best possible numbers, too, since he is playing for his next contract.

Eventually, Torres should be able to rebound to some degree: he is too good a hitter for his OPS to be around .500.

At the moment, however, he doesn’t seem close to turning things around.

These things usually require patience, and Yankees fans aren’t exactly known for that trait.

We will have to wait and see.
