Young players shine as USWNT defeat Iceland

USWNT downs Iceland behind strong play from young players

The U.S. women’s national team, fresh off their Olympic Gold Medal win, triumphed over Iceland with a 3-1 victory on Thursday night.

Alyssa Thompson, making her return to international play, scored her first goal for the USWNT, with Jaedyn Shaw and Sophia Smith adding late goals to secure the win. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made three crucial saves during the match.

In the first half, the USWNT dominated possession, controlling 70% of the ball and creating opportunities mainly through set pieces. Despite their strong hold on the game, Iceland managed some chances on the counterattack that they failed to convert.

Thompson, who missed out on the Olympics, showcased her scoring prowess by netting her debut goal for the national team with a well-placed finish from the left wing. Her performance impressed coach Emma Hayes, who praised her ability to find the back of the net.

Following Thompson’s goal, Iceland responded with a goal of their own from Selma Sól Magnúsdóttir. However, a late surge from the USWNT, including a winning goal from Shaw and a final goal from Smith, ensured the victory.

Hayes made strategic substitutions during the game, including bringing in Yazmeen Ryan for her national team debut. The young squad showed promise with two 19-year-olds scoring in the same match, hinting at a bright future for the team.

The USWNT will face Iceland again in Nashville, looking to build on their recent success and continue their path of growth and improvement.
