Mirra Andreeva is one of the biggest talents on the WTA Tour, and she’s proving it with every match that she plays, most recently at the 2024 Roland Garros.
The teenager seems to excel at every tournament she enters for the first time. Last year, she reached the fourth round of the Madrid tournament, and this year, she even made it to the quarter-finals of the Madrid tournament.
Additionally, she has won her first match at each major she has played for the first time, and the French Open is the first Grand Slam she is playing for the second time in her young career.
Last year, at 16 years old, she reached the third round, defeating Alison Riske and Diane Parry while only losing six games along the way, before being eliminated by former finalist Coco Gauff, despite winning the opening set in a tie-break.
This year, she started with a convincing victory similar to last year. Andreeva faced Emina Bektas, a 31-year-old world no. 98 from the United States, who is not very experienced on clay courts.
This was evident as Andreeva broke early in the opening set and added another break, while saving four break points, easily winning the first set 6-2.
Andreeva’s returning performance was strong in this match, but her serving was inconsistent, despite moments of brilliance.
In the second set, Andreeva lost her serve once, but thanks to breaking her opponent three times, she easily won the match 6-2, 6-3, advancing to the second round of the 2024 Roland Garros.
Up next, Andreeva will face the winner of the match between the 19th-seeded Victoria Azarenka and former Roland Garros semi-finalist Nadia Podoroska.
