Mirra Andreeva was the eight seed at the 2024 Bad Homburg Open, but she lost already in the opening round of the WTA 500 tournament.
The 17-year-old has been turning heads since her sensational breakthrough at the 2023 Madrid Open at 15. Since then, she has many more matches under her belt, and thanks to that, she made it to the seeded spots in Bad Homburg.
However, even a seeded spot didn’t ensure her that she would avoid a high-ranked opponent, as the Russian player against the world no. 27, Dayana Yastremska, who already played one grass match this year, losing in the first round of the qualifying at the Berlin Open.
Still, the teenager was heavily favored in this match, especially because of her natural talent and last year’s run at Wimbledon, where she cruised through qualifying before reaching the fourth round.
In this match, Andreeva also started well. She was comfortable on her serve, and thanks to breaking her opponent’s serve once, she easily won the opening set 6-4.
In the second set, however, her Ukrainian opponent started better, leading 5-2 after few minutes of play. However, Yastremska lost the one-break advantage when serving for the set, but that didn’t matter moments later.
When finally breaking back, Andreeva lost her serve again, losing the second set 4-6, letting her opponent to force the decider in the first-round clash of two Top 30 players.
But the misery continued for the teenager. She wasn’t able to create a single break point opportunity in the third set, while her opponent had three. Although the Ukrainian left her first two unused in the second game, she used her chance in game number eight, breaking for the first time in the third set.
That one-break lead was enough for Yastremska to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and eliminate the eighth seed from the 2024 Bad Homburg Open.
