Zverev’s Wimbledon Journey Ends as Fritz Prevails in Marathon Match

Hampered Zverev Ousted By Tenacious Fritz In Epic Five-Setter At Wimbledon

Alexander Zverev attempted to outplay Taylor Fritz at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships despite being hindered by an injury, but the American produced a great level to prevent him from doing so.

The two met in one of the most exciting fourth-round matches at SW19 this year. The German player is currently second in the 2024 ATP Race, with only Jannik Sinner collecting more points this year. On the other hand, the American was on a seven-match winning streak, winning the title in Eastbourne before the grass-court major.

What made this match particularly intriguing was Zverev’s knee injury, limiting his movement. However, Fritz has faced injured opponents before, notably when Rafael Nadal defeated him in the 2022 Wimbledon quarterfinals.

This year, Fritz sought revenge against a different opponent. Despite a slow start, Zverev managed to break and secure the first set 6-4.

The second set went to a tie-break, which Zverev won 7-4. In the third set, Fritz capitalized on his opponent’s limitations and broke Zverev to take the set 6-4.

The fourth set also went to a tie-break, which Fritz dominated to force a fifth and final set.

Fritz continued his momentum, breaking Zverev early in the final set and eventually winning the match 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
